compared to permanant employee. My company keeps about 15% of contractors, all of them are project-centric. Meaning that they are being hired for 6-15 months just to quickly put together something, and the team will dissolve soon after the project is done. It doesn't matter how good you are. Their life style is very hectic and unhealthy. Their works are almost always low-level by nature. From certain perspective you can say it's really labor-intensive.
I also disagree that "most people" stop caring after $55/hr. That is why I see a lot of my co-workers, even contractors, trying to take turn with their spouse finish their MBA degree, or trying to get an architect job. Because they don't want to be a developer their whole lives.
