See, it all depends on what you really want: money, work-life balance, internal career path...etc. On the technical side, if you can be an application architect, you can make about 150K. If you ascend to enterprise architect, you can make about 200K (in a mid-to-large corporate). And if you are an enterprise architect, you have a shot to be a chief enterprise architect, which is at least an assistant VP position. Beyond that you can go all the way to CTO or CIO. In my company, a chief architect makes about 300K plus benefits, CTO makes about 550K plus MUCH MORE benefits, including bigger bonus, longer vacation and loads of stock options. If you want that, you wouldn't want to stay on a contractor's job. Of course you can always say "most people don't want that". That I will not argue with you. :-)
