So far never seen any contractor holding an architect position, not even app architect. Of course this doesn't mean that the entire world is like that. But for the 3 companies I worked for, they never hired contractors for architect roles. On the contrary, they demanded that architect positions (app architects) should be hold by perm employees because they are familiar with company's Best Practice and processes and is easier to work with the enterprise architects, or someone acts in that capacity.
But I also agree that if they want to hire a contractor, they would offer a perm position. That is very possible. But this was not the original point I was trying to make though.
