that being a contractor is good if you want to stay on the developer track. Most companies won't even consider hiring contractors for an architect position, especially enterprise architect. And if you compare two positions at the same/similar base salary level, being an architect sounds far more attractive to me than being a contractor developer.
The only thing that I disagree with skipper3 is that I don't think a perm job is necessarily "worse" than a contracting job. It all depends on which career path you choose. That's it.
