If you don't produce twice as much as others, why should you be paid double? If you have special value to the boss but you need others to help you achieve it, your boss should give you the power to manage and select your helpers. This applies to the university as well.

Another problem is that you may have special value because of your experience overseas, or because you have some know-how that your boss wants very much. However, these advantages don't last long. Soon, people around you will learn your skills (and they should, because your job would include teaching them). After that, you can no longer justify your double-pay.

The only way to lock-in your advantage and get better pay for life is to have your own company. Nobody will question the income of a boss (well, nobody in the company anyway).
