I just talked on phone with Mr. Jerry Bluestein
of Ad Standard Dept, LA Times. He said that
he is familar with that paid-ad because some
chinese news agencies (including XingHua)
already contacted him on this issue.

Mr. Bluestein said that LAT does not check the
correctness of the paid-ad. It is the
advertiser's responsibility instead of theirs.
But LAT will stop posting the ad again.

Before talking to Mr. Bluestein, I got Ms. Dean's
permission to post her email here:

Greetings, Dr. **.

Thank you for your question.

The image you sent appears to be a scanned or photographed image of our
authentic newspaper page B-6 dated October 4, 2004. (The November 10,
2004 red date on the image seems to have been added later when the
image was taken or scanned.)

The box about the Top Chinese Universities named in a survey by the
union mentioned is indeed a paid advertisement and is not an article with
researched facts written by a Times staff writer or any reporter.

Thank you again for contacting us with your question.

Sincerely,
Janette Dean
