Unlike China, which put pressure on everyone to conform, US is a country that values individuality. You apparently still see Americans from an old Chinese perspective. Watching football might make you appear to be "fit in", but unless you do it because you like it, your act actually makes you farther away from being a true American. A key characteristic of American is to be yourself. And Americans will respect you that way.
I said the above not because I don't watch football. As a matter of fact, I watch too much football. Does that make me more American? I have some colleagues (white american males) who never watch football and some even refuse to have TV's in their homes. Does that make them less American?
