USS Johnston did not fired till it sunk. It was disabled around 9:30 Oct. 25, 1944, after fearlessly fighting superior Japanese task force which included the largest battleships ever built, Yamato. Cmdr. Evans ordered abandoned the ship at 9:45. Around 10:10. Johnston sunk. Cmdr Evans couldn't be found among the rescured. He was seriously wounded earlier that day, and remained in command even after the bridge was destoryed. He shifted the command to the fantail, and put the ship in between the enemy fires and the US carriers.

This is the famous "the last stand of tin can sailors," and Evans posthumously was awarded medal of honor.
