Unbeknown to many, engine can play *two* roles. It
can move your car, obviously. But, when your car
is being moved by gravity (e.g. in the case of
长距离下坡), it can act as a "brake". It is known
as engine "braking". Without it, your brake pad will
be easily worn out in several hundred miles
as opposed to thousands. Plus, if you are in
neutral, and in case of emergency, your
brake pad may not be enough to effectively
stop your car.

Therefore, the safest, recommended approach to
长距离下坡 is to engage in low gear.

In fact, on some well
design vehicles such as BMW and Honda, even
for auto transmissions, there is a
"hill decent" control feature which could
automatically downshift when a downhill run
is sensed.
