Conclusions: Creation of an artificial somato-autonomic reflex arch in SCI patients had no significant effect on lower urinary tract function. The disappointing results could be due to a multitude of factors including nerve root neuropathy, suboptimal choice of recipient nerve root sheath (S2 versus S3), lack of nerve regrowth, neuroma formation or lack of sufficient synaptic discharge at target organ. Consequently, we question the clinical use of the procedure against neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
