why Japanese people, oppressed by the west themselves not long ago, can be so atrocious, and why common people were so supportive. Without being presented the propoganda--not shameless propoganda, which is not that effective, but the propoganda with more or less asthetic value, one have to conclude that the Japanese are born to be so atorcious--which is anti-common sense.

Understanding the propoganda can be vital in understand that particular piece of history. I think, when presented those pictures, even without explanation, anyone with some knowledge of history won't think it's really heroic. However, the heroic sense the painters tried to convey (but failed towards the modern audience) is the very suggestive.
