I am not saying Hamas' way is anything other than violent. However, they were sent to the power by the people in their own country (wisely or unwisely) and Mr.Bush comment is like slapping the Palestainians in their faces. This is not a wise strategy. At the worst, this hostality will be exploited by Hamas (like what had been exploited by Mao's party) and Palestain will simply shut its door. And a violent government with popular suppor is tempted by dicatorship (again, Mao), no matter how they come into power--by peaceful mean or violence.

Declaring your "principles" again and again and refusing to act won't help--this simply reflect the dichotomic view of nothing-or-all. One better strategy is accepting the result, trying to gain small while declaring the big. This will work better in this case--Palestain is small and weak whose violence is in a form of terrorism rather than war and some compromise won't lead to the terrible result of Germany under Hilter (which is strong enough to make war). If Palestain shut its door, it will easily turn into a base for terrorist training. This is why I say Mr.Bush is not wise (my father said that's boyish). Offensing people is not always good in diplomacy (I can say never good--offence is good only when it's calculated, fake, pretended offense).

In addition, officially America is promoting "democracy" (let's leave the question of wheather democracy is universially good/sufficiently good), it can not embrace the pleasing democratic result while denouncing the unpleasant result.
