Their system was working in batch mode. The data of jobs were stored on taps. The system readed in all jobs from several taps, created several processes in memory. These processes ran concurrently, in the sense that when one process outputed data, another process could occupy the CPU.
I know this is because I implemented a similar system as my OS homework.
