Just thought it might be helpful. To get the things done quick, Fortran is far better than C++, as far as the development time is concerned. You may find C++ is more useful for otherpurse, you may pursue that direction in parallel to what you supervisor expected you to do. Java, on the other hand, is more interesting and seems to a trend that C++ is being replaced by Java in many areas.

BTW, I'm not a computer programmer, nor am I biased on Fortran. Just though you want to optimize the time you spend on doing hevey computation and the the time you spend with the ones you love.
