I've seen people from China insisted changing other's name.

Like my wife's last name. The spelling is in her passport, driver license and all offical document in. Yet, many people from China insisted spelling it like pinyin. I am sure they didn't mean to offend or anything. I believe that many people from mainland always assume Chinese desendents have to be the same as those from mainland like names. At least, 10 years ago, that's the case.
