I just changed job 7 months ago. In Washington DC area, at the end of 2005, the number of C++ job positions vs. Java job positions was about 450:2000. I don't think it changes too much now. One of my co-workers, a junior Java programmer with 1.5 yrs of experience and no security clearance, was offered 80K. And my team lead, a senior C++ programmer with no Java exposure, landed on a job with a little bit more than 81K pay. And it took him almost 4 months!
Unless other cities have a drastically different IT eco system, I interpret this as C++ being an obsolete technology.
