There are tons of reports in literature comparing the overall and disease-specified mortality between different population within a country or across different countries. Age is well-known the most important risk of death, therefore, age-adjusted death rate is used to compare between population without specifying age limit, it is so called standardization using either direct or indirect method.
Also the leading causes of death are different between counties. Cardiovascular disease is #1 killer in US while cancer is #1 in China. These kind of findings are published annually
