C++, as far as I know, is still heavily used for heavy numerical computation. Java can not substitute it for sure. Though I don't know too much about the computational power of C# (sounds like a new C++)...

Even Fortran (old enough) is not seeing its tomb in the numerical area.

I guess newer things will be better only if they are targetting the same task. Java was designed for a different purpose than C++.
