回答: 助理研究员=assistant professor吗? 由 axtd 于 2005-3-08, 12:21:48:

I used to translate it into

Assistant Research Professor or
Research Assistant Professor

But actually, in US universities, similar titles are like "adjunct" prof., not part of faculty. But in China, 助理研究员 in research institue corresponds to 讲师 in universities,讲师 is definitely part of faculty which can be promoted to Associate Professor and Full Professor in time. Although due to 国情,讲师 in Chinese universities do not have to have PhD (but the situation is changing, and it will eventually be a precondition), the important thing is that 讲师 is full-time faculty, roughly have the similar responsibilities to their counterparts (assistant prof) in western universtities.

The problem with the translation of Assistant Professor is: it gives an impression that 助理研究员 also teaches courses, which is not the case.

Maybe a better translation is:

Assistant Research Scientist (corresponding to the rank of Assistant Professor)

I would not consider it wrong if people want to translate it into

Assistant Research Fellow
