The idea is to find $5,000 to purchase a server. There has been a number of discussions about how get one cheap. IMHO, buying a server for xys may be the wrong way to operate. Let me explain: (1) One can spend $5,000 for a machine. But it does not last forever. The useful life of a computer is probably only two years. This means that the cost is $200 per month. Even if you assume that the machine will last 4 years, it still costs $100 per month. (2) Buying the server is only half the expenses. Currently, I believe, xys uses Netix as the ISP to provide the access to the Internet. According to the homepage of Netix (www.netix.com), they charge $150 per month, after you buy the server. Adding the two, the monthly cost becomes $350 per month (or $250 per mo). This is very expensive. Next point. xys is growing very fast. This means that one should not buy! If you buy based on the current traffic volume, you will need a new machine. If you buy based on the future traffic volume, you have excess capacity which is wasteful. Why buy, if you can rent? There are hundreds of ISP which can provide better service at lower cost. Pick one where xys only represents 1% or less of their total capacity. Let me give one example: 9Netavenue has a Pro Plan at $40 per month. This give you 100 MB of disc space, 5,000 MB of monthly data transfer, $0.08 over, with multiple OC3's to UUnet. This is much faster than Netix, I am sure. Details from www.9netave.net I am NOT proposing that you use this company. Only to show that there are many companies like it who can provide xys with faster and adequate bandwidth for a total price of around $50 per month. If xys can raise $10,000 and if you rent instead of buy, then the interest income from the capital will keep xys financial secure for a long time. If xys cannot raise $10,000 all at once, I am sure that we the readers of xys can raise enough to pay for the current expense at least. I for one will pledge my financial support to this wonderful project by Mr. Fang. Ming L. Initially xys was charged $ 150 per month, but now we pay $ 300 per month for the networking rent, because, they said, we are using their co-location service instead of Web hosting. If we can find a better deal, we can move, but that can only happen when we have our own machine. > example: > 9Netavenue has a Pro Plan at $40 per month. The current traffic of xys is more than 30 GB of monthly data transfer, that means we need to pay $2,000 extra per month. There are other ISPs will charge less ($20-30/GB), but still more expensive than the current cost. This kind of Web hosting service is not as good as it sounds. They are targeting low traffic Web pages. For a highl traffic site like xys, co-location is a better choice, but it requirs we have our own machine. Also, this kind of Web hosting usually doesn't allow advertisements, that means we have to totally depend on donation to pay the expense. > enough to pay for the current expense at least. Those departments don't have a lot of money themselves. But what we could do is to contact them and get some kind of testimonies from them, and then go to where the big money is, like the Ford Foundation, National Endowment of Arts, National Endowment of Education, etc.. Just go find a good TV show on PBS, and look at their sponsor list. :) To do this, we need to write up a lot of ducuments and propoganda. But I suspect the most useful things are testimonies and recommendation letters. If we can get some real strong ones from big universities, I think we are in the game. But for $300/month charged by the present ISP, I urge to at least investigate other possiblities. Please look at for instance. Topchoice.com has over 10,000 virtual domains right now. It is not a small, unreliable company. It's business plan appears to want to grow even bigger. It clearly states that it gives you 150MB of disk space and unlimited monthly transfers. The price is $25 per month. I have been using this company without any problems. I think you should give them a try. It is unlikely that they would change their pricing policy next month just because of you. They have 10,000 other customers to think about. I have gone through several ISPs in the past few years. IT is my feeling that many of the smaller ISPs can no longer compete with these larger ISPs on both prices, and 24/7 tech support service, and therefore may go out of business sooner or later. These large ISPs specialize in hosting only. They make money because they have 10,000 accounts. As long as you are less than 0.1% of the business, they do not to worry too much about traffic volume. You have been told that because of 30GB of traffic, you have to use a server. This may be the pricing policy of a particular ISP. It is NOT the real reason for anyone to switch to co-location or server. Using a server is inherently more expense, because it allows you to have private relational database, your own computer programs, and high-speed response to user's inquiries. XYS does not need these things. Just because xys has high traffic, it is still cheaper for the ISP to service you as an ordinary customer rather than to use a server. As a business, they can decide to charge a flat rate or on a per GB basis. That is their business decision. AOL used to charge by the hour, and they switch to a flat rate schedule, for instance. Topchoice.com is not the only ISP to adopt an unlimited traffic model. There are others I know about and use. So they are real. Why not investigate? Regards, Ming P.S. If you really want to stay with your current ISP, at least gather the data and use it to bargin with your ISP for a cheaper price? Shi-min Fang wrote: > On Mon, 1 Jun 1998, Ming L. Rosenberg and his wife Ethel were executed in the Sing Sing electric chair in 1953 for what FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover called the "crime of the century" - helping the Soviet Union get their hands on blueprints for the atomic bomb in World War II. The Rosenbergs went to their deaths, the only Americans ever executed for spying, insisting they were innocent. The new twist in the long-argued story of treachery comes from Alexander Feklisov, 83, a retired KGB officer who has stepped forward with a detailed account of the Rosenbergs' role. Feklisov said he held clandestine meetings with Julius Rosenberg in New York from 1943 to 1946 and claims to be the only Soviet intelligence officer alive with firsthand knowledge of the Rosenberg case. He told The Washington Post, Cox News Service and The New York Times that Rosenberg passed valuable secrets about U.S. military electronics but played only a peripheral role in Soviet atomic espionage. And he said Ethel Rosenberg did not actively spy but probably was aware that her husband was involved. He said neither he nor any other Soviet intelligence agent met Ethel Rosenberg. "She had nothing to do with this. She was completely innocent," Feklisov said in an interview with The New York Times in Moscow. The retired KGB officer also told his story to The Washington Post, Cox News Service and the cable television network Discovery Channel, airing a documentary on the case next Sunday. The Rosenbergs were convicted of spying and conspiracy mainly on the testimony of Ethel Rosenberg's brother, David Greenglass, and his wife, Ruth, who were arrested for conspiracy and confessed. Greenglass named Julius Rosenberg as his recruiter and also implicated Rosenberg's wife. Feklisov said Julius Rosenberg recommended David Greenglass to him as a possible recruit in 1944. Greenglass worked as a mechanic at Los Alamos, N.M., where the first atomic bombs were assembled. Feklisov insists that Greenglass provided little of use to Moscow, which had other valuable spies at Los Alamos. Feklisov says the principal contributions by Rosenberg were secrets about U.S. military electronics. He cited Rosenberg's passing of a fully functioning proximity fuse, a secret World War II U.S. innovation that enables an anti-aircraft missile to bring down its target without hitting it. Rosenberg assembled a duplicate proximity fuse from discarded spare parts and smuggled it out of the Emerson Radio Factory in New York City in December 1944. "I have a Christmas present for the Red Army," Feklisov quotes Rosenberg as telling him at their next meeting. 1997 Associated Press ~{ ---------- Personal homepage: http://www.xys.org/~fang/index.html http://www.cif.rochester.edu/users/sfang/ XinYuSi homepage: http://www.xys.org From owner-xys-friends@xys.org Tue Jun 9 08:00 PDT 1998 Return-Path: owner-xys-friends@xys.org Received: (majordom@localhost) by xys.xys.org (8.6.9/8.6.9.XYS-YZC) id GAA08332 for xys-friends-list;
