　　英国10岁女孩究竟在海滩上看到了什么

　　昨天读了陶世龙先生的《要做一个有知识的人——印尼海啸引起的思考之二》
(XYS20050109)后面所附的报道, 感觉与我读过的英文报道中英国女孩所看到的
海啸预兆有所不同. 我在网上做了点调查, 发现所有的中文报道竟然都错了. 由
于这是一个很重要的常识, 人命关天, 我想在此澄清一下.

　　中文报道主要有两种, 一种是: 

　　小缇丽说，“…我当时正在海滩上，我看到了很多的泡泡，然后浪就突然打
了过来。我意识到了这里将要发生海啸。我就告诉了妈妈。” [1]

　　另一种是:
　　当时，穿着泳装的蒂莉发现在大海的远处突然涌现出了一波白色的巨浪，将
蓝天和大海明显地隔成了两半。观察力敏锐的蒂莉凭借自己在学校里掌握的地理
知识，意识到这绝对不是一般的惊涛骇浪，很有可能会在顷刻之间把整个海滩给
吞没。[2]

　　英文的报道也有几种, 但意思都一样. (Google: tsunami tilly smith)

　　一种是原话: "I was on the beach and the water started to go 
funny," Tilly was quoted as telling The Sun. "There were bubbles and 
the tide went out all of a sudden. I recognized what was happening and 
had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami. I told mummy." [3] (翻译: 
“我在海滩上, 水开始变得古怪”, 太阳报引用缇丽的话说, “泡沫出现, 潮水
突然退了下去. 我认出了正在发生的现象,感觉海啸要来了. 我告诉了妈妈.”)

　　另一种详细描述: Watching the abrupt withdrawal of the tide and 
small bubbles forming on the beach, she recalled her teacher saying 
there was about 10 minutes between the time the ocean recedes and the 
moment a tsunami strikes. [4] (翻译: 看到潮水突然退了和海滩上形成了小
泡沫, 她回想起老师说过在海退下和海啸袭来之间大约有10 分钟)

　　还有一种是简单的描述: …when the sea rushed out and began to 
bubble.[5] (翻译: …当海退下去并开始冒泡)

　　第一种中文报道可能是翻译错了意思. 第二种中文报道简直是记者不负责任
胡乱想象, 根本不合逻辑. 你想, 小孩能看到的巨浪大人就看不到? 并且, 根据
报道, 这次海啸并没有电影镜头里出现的滔天巨浪, 而只是潮水不断升得很高.

　　海水突然退下去几十米甚至几百米, 是海啸即临的征兆. 赶紧撒腿往高处跑
是唯一的选择. 这次有不少人跑到海滩上捡搁浅的鱼蟹, 而后不幸葬身海里, 实
在是不应发生的悲剧. 一些岛上古老部落代代相传下这一智慧, 这次海啸人人有
幸逃脱. [6]

　　本来我对中国记者的英文水平和责任心从不苛求. 但这次的小常识至关重要, 
特别是下次你到海边, 记住了它玩得就放心了.
