As far as I know, most faculties and almost all the staff members speak cantonese. HKUST is different from other Hong Kong universities. HKUST follows the US system. Almost all the faculties have US Ph.D. There are also many faculties who are originally from mainland china and who received their Ph.D. from US or Canada.
