According to the report, this was a trap setup by the Talibans. They intentionally pinned down a small ground troop and expected that choppers will be sent in. There is only one route for the chopper to come in and that's a long valley. This is perfect for setting up cross-fires.

The Talibans either have great intelligence source or they've already learned the patterns of US troop movement, or both.
