Parody music 是由来已久的，早在中世纪就有了。在中国历史上，不少相声演员都会拿一些出名的京剧唱词来改词调笑，但那只是相声中的一节，似乎不能算是 Parody music。虽然在 youtube 上也见过一些把出名的流行曲改词，但相信这些都没经过原作者的同意，属于山寨一类的。
在美国和香港都有一些 parody songs 是正式得到同意出版的。其中最出名的该算 Eat It，在澳洲流行榜上，Eat it 曾排名第一，而原装的 Beat it 才排第三。
