A routine background check ended the 15-year charade by a Michigan man who lined up federal grants and even trained hospital staff without having any of the medical credentials he had claimed, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The newspaper says the apparent hoax was upended after a staffer at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., found it suspicious that William Hamman, 58, was able to secure millions of dollars in research grants, fees and salaries yet never treated patients nor applied for physician admitting privileges at the facility.
After he was confronted with the background check, Hammond, who billed himself as a doctor, researcher and certified pilot, resigned in June as medical director of Beaumont's medical simulation and research program, where he had worked since January 2009.
He had also served as co-director of Western Michigan University's Center of Excellence for Simulation Research from 2004 to 2009.
The newspaper says Hamman's resume was not vetted by either the hospital's medical administration nor human resources departments, according to hospital spokeswoman Colette Stimmell.
The newspaper says Hamman had also contracted with the American College of Cardiology to teach doctors how to communicate with others in medical emergencies and was to do similar training for the American Medical Association, the Free Press says.
The Associated Press said it was unable to contact Hamman or his lawyer for comment.
