几经辗转，记者联系上了神源医院外联办主任吕少杰。他告诉记者，“医院正在进行调整，手术本身没有任何问题。10月底，整个医院将并入郑州大学第四附属医院，继续开展手术。”
After a lot of bother (?), the reporter got contact with Lü Shao-jie, the director of Liaison Office (外联办?) of Shen Yuan Hospital. He told the reporter, “Our hospital is undergoing a reform; there is no any problem about the operation itself. By the end of October, the whole hospital will be annexed to the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, and the operations will resume.”
在吕少杰的联系下，记者见到了负责实施手术的医生何朝宏。
After Lü Shao-jie’s contact, the reporter met He Zhao-hong, who is in charge of implementing the operation.

“无论是基础研究还是临床应用，(人工反射弧)都被证明是有效的。”何朝宏告诉记者，3年来，神源医院一共做了大约1500例人工反射弧手术 (其中2006年约100例，2007年约300例，2008年约800例，2009年约300例)，“效果非常好，成功率85%”。

“Whether from basic or from clinical application, (the artificial reflex arc) is proven to be effective.” He Zhao-hong told the reporter, in the recent 3 years, the Shen Yuan Hospital had carried out about 1500 artificial reflex arc operations (including about 100 in 2006, about 300 in 2007, about 800 in 2008, and about 300 in 2009), “the results are very good, with success ratio of 85%.”

How “success ratio of 85%” was obtained
那么，这个成功率是怎么得到的呢？神源医院方面说有两个渠道，一是术后打电话做随访，二是患者复查时做尿动力测试。
So, how the success ratio was obtained? The side of Shen Yuan Hospital said that they had two channels, one is the telephone follow-up after operations, and the other is the urine dynamic tests during reexamination of the patients.
随后，《中国新闻周刊》记者采访了医院专门负责随访的工作人员贾斌。他告诉记者，现在的成功率主要来自于对2008年之前400多例手术效果的随访，因为“手术一般要一年后才见效”。贾斌说，在这400名患者中，他们有效随访了280多位，“原则上，我们对每个患者都要随访两年，但有些联系不上，就只能算了”。
Soon afterwards, the reporter of Chinese News Weekly interviewed Jia Bin, who is in charge of the follow-up investigation arranged specially by the hospital. He told the reporter, the current success ratio came mainly from the follow-up investigation on the results of over 400 operations before 2008, the reason is “operation would have the desired effect generally after one year”. Jia Bin said, among the 400 patients, they followed up over 280 in effect; “in principle, we need to follow up each patient for two years, but some of them are out of touch so we had to give up.”
采访贾斌时，记者提出看一看随访的统计资料。他说“现在医院正在搬家，比较乱，不太好找”。记者又提出能否提供几位手术成功患者的联系方式，以便采访。他回答说可以，不过要回去找一找，等找到给记者发短信，但此后他再没跟记者联系。
During the interview with Jia Bin, the reporter proposed to have a look on the statistical documents of the follow-up investigations. He said “now the hospital is in a mess due to relocation and it is not so easy to find”. The reporter then proposed whether he could provide some contact way to a couple of patients with successful operations for interview. He replied “sure”; but needed to have a search after going back to the hospital, and would send message to the reporter after finding it. But he never contacted the reporter afterwards.
记者还特别提到，希望能与海南患儿小善善取得联系。在记者接触的家长中不少都是因为看了有关他手术成功的报道，才来就诊的。而贾斌回答说：“他家电话前两年还通呢，现在不知为什么，我也打不通”。
The reporter also asked specially to contact little Shan-Shan, the child patient from Hainan Province. Among all the parents of child patients whom the reporter contacted, many decided to come to the hospital just because they had seen the report on the success of little Shan-Shan’s operation. However Jia Bin replied, “His home phone was reachable until two years ago; but now even I cannot get through to them and don’t know why.”

“在2008年前接受手术的400名患者中，有220多名做过尿动力测试，”何朝宏说，“成功率也是85%。”尿动力测试主要是检测膀胱的收缩功能。相对于随访，何朝宏认为这更有说服力，“症状虽然是客观的，但总有些主观的东西在里面。我们就看尿动力图，(病人)膀胱本来是不能收缩的，手术后能收缩了，我们就认为是有效的。”

“Among the 400 patients that had undergone operations before 2008, over 220 had urine dynamic test,” said He Zhao-hong. “the success ratio is also 85%.” The main purpose of a urine dynamic test is to examine the bladder’s shrinkage. Comparing to follow-up investigation, He Zhao-hong believed that this is more convincing, “Symptoms are objective though, there is always subjective inside. We just looking at the urine dynamic plots; if the bladders (of the patients) were unshrinkable previously and shrinkable after the operation, then we believe that it is effective.”
