that case, the burn process will be terminated. However, once the burn process completes, there is no difference between slow or fast burn. Also, M$ is known to be notorious for its burning that only the same version of M$ OS can read it, if you user the window explorer to create the CD. That may have been the reason xj cannot read your CD back. Plus some older CD burners also have problems like only the same burner can read the burn CD, this could have been another reason.
