回答: to Aza: depression is not only a biological issue. 由 true 于 2009-10-29, 21:52:06:

Depression has many causes. Most of the blockbuster drugs, as long-run clinical trials suggest, do not have statistically significant effect on curing depressions. There are many relapses, and placebos fair not too bad compared to the real drugs.

However, Economist article does report that medical reviews find that for the patients on the verge of committing suicide, these wonder drugs do have an impact in preventing crossings of the "thin red line".

The punch line in the article is: even though the overall effect of those drugs for curing depressions (as targeting biological effect on the brains) is not that impressive; for those on the abyss of darkness, that may be all we need---a tiny statistical significance makes a huge difference in terms of social and economic costs of dealing with fatal suicides!
