When comparing Huygens' wave theory and Newton's corpuscular theory, we are comparing the way these two theories describe how light propagate. It has nothing to do with the interaction between light and matters. In that aspect, QED describes light in almost exactly the same way as wave theory does, except that the wave intensity is now intepreted as the probability that a photon might be found at a given point. But again this latter point does not matter at all when comparing Newton's theory and Huygen's theory because of the Law of Large Numbers. In fact, Feynman developed his propagation theory (path intergral) from Huygen's Principle. But QED really has nothing common with Newton's corpuscular theory. Photon in QED is a completely different thing to Newton's minute particle.

Therefore, it's not necessary for Fang to know QED before he wrote that article. QED really does not add anything new here.
