CLEMSON -- Clemson University is planning to notify non-tenure-track lecture
rs that there is a very good chance some may not be retained after the curre
nt academic year, a university spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Giving early notification of the possible job losses “is the right thing to
do, so that they will have time to look for other options,” said Clemson s
pokeswoman Cathy Sams.

In general, instructors who are not tenured professors or professors in the
process of becoming tenured are lecturers. Clemson employs roughly 100 of th
ese lecturers, said David Grigsby, senior vice provost.

The university is making every effort to retain as many of its instructors a
s possible, Grigsby said.

There are no plans to lay off any tenured or tenure-track faculty, Grigsby s
aid.

Losing $26 million in state funding will have a major impact on the universi
ty, and more state funding cuts are expected based on the state’s economic
forecast, Sams said.

Clemson has managed to balance the budget for the current year – pending an
y further cuts. Plans for the next fiscal year are not yet finalized, she sa
id.

“There is much more work to do, and a lot of ideas are still on the table.
First and foremost, there is no higher priority than our commitment to our s
tudents,” Sams said.

Faculty, deans and department chairs have worked very hard to make sure that
the spring course schedule was not affected by the actions taken so far thi
s year, Sams said.

University officials are working to insure that a full course schedule can b
e offered for fall of 2009 so that students can get the classes they need in
order to stay on track for graduation, Sams said.

Clemson University recently announced a budget strategy that includes five d
ay furloughs for all administrators, faculty and staff, delay of planned con
struction projects, and direct contributions of funding from athletics, hous
ing and other auxiliary programs.
