I think it is a big step by eliminating the mirror box. The result is the reduction of the size and thickness of camera body. However, I think the most significant benefit is the improvement of camera's durability. The mirror box is a mechanical device. It is expensive (vs. electronics) and easy to fail due to shock.

I am not a fan of photography. I just did some work on CCD electronics and its performance.
