Strong earthquakes can last much longer than a minute. The Alaska earthquake of 1964 lasted more than 3 minutes. I don't know why you wanted to question people's account of the length of the earthquake.

Also, don't try to show off your smartness on this tragedy. Why do you think the kids would have had enough time to run out? Who could have predicted the collapse of the building? If the building didn't collapse then staying inside would have been safer than running out during the quake. The students may have been told by their teachers to stay put. And I would not fault the teachers either - their decision would have been correct if it was a milder earthquake or if the building were better built.
