回答: I know the role of Chancellor. 由 steven 于 2006-1-17, 01:42:53:

Looking back to the origin of the discussion, I wonder if we have much difference. My point is that Chancellor is not suitable to be translated to 校长, and President or Vice Chancellor is proper to be considered 校长 in british university system.

1. Chancellor and President are two very different positions and cannot be used interchangablely. Hence, the proper Chinese translation should reflect the difference.

2. Who is more suitable to get the 校长 title between Chancellor and President? If we review the definition and description of Chancellor, we can see these key words: non-executive, volunteer and titular. The role of Chancellor is far from 校长 in Chinese.

Any way, I am glad to have the discussion with you! To clarify, I would put the following straight: My point is NOT that Chancellor is not an important role, by any means. Fundraising is a critical task for most western universities. Just not every critical role is suitable to be named as 校长.
