institional problem seen in a dichotomist way. Someone had pointed out oil, and you can extend it to natural resource in general hence less survival pressure of its people. And I am speculating on the historical hertiage, both from Communist and Tzar Empire era. We have to face it that Russian are generally more educated than Chinese, and they have understood Socialism (Utopia I agree, but as an ideal, it is a very pleasant one), hence have more sense of justice and equality. They had the traditional of fighting more bravely upon the oppression than Chinese. So they have less tolerant on extreme inequality. But all these, did not prevent Putin is rebuilding a totalist state (I had been cut off from current non-economic events, especially outside England these few months, but up to one year ago, the civil liberty condition in Russia worried many commentors a lot, only second to Iraq. Some even call it dictatorship).

To be fair, the first thing to look at is the circumstances before Russia's political reform and China's economic reform. Many people are mocking the Shock-Theapy (I don't think it's the success as people believe), saying that Russian had nothing to eat. Others are pointing how well Russian now are doing (especially after the initial brief pain). Both of them are commiting the same mistakes: Not seeing the long enough, either after one point or before one point, or both. Making a conclusion with one or two snapshot is quite hurry, which can only be rivaled by making a conclusion with one or two snapshots in ONE or TWO PLACES ONLY. We need to see how it evolved and how it is likely to evolve to make some conclusion.

I am not an apologist on the current situation in China. But I don't have too rosy a picture on the "democratic" Russia. Focusing on only one aspect is fine (we have only limited energy as an individual), but we need to keep in mind that, if this focus is being too narrow, we will easily fall into the trap of Utopianism.

And I don't know when I offended you. But if so, please accept my sincere apology. As a matter of fact, I enjoy reading your posts a lot, and sad to feel the hostility (or simply because I am too sensitive).
