If they are all 上海人, I don't think I care they speak 上海话 or not. However, in this case, somebody in the room CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! It is not polite.
Of course, if you can not speak other language besides 上海话, it is not your fault. We need to pay some money to hire a translator. But actually you CAN SPEAK 普通话. Speaking 上海话 instead of 普通话 in this case makes people feel you don't care other's feelings.
Some dialect can be understood without much difficulty (90%), however, I can only understand 1% of 上海话.
普通话 has its legal status as an official language in China.
