Forcing kids to recites those old dead poems(use lots of characters never used in modern languages, and are not meant to be understood without a dictionary for a modern person) is child abuse.
But I don't know why, I think Haiku is very good. Maybe simply because Japanese culture is not that "sophisticated"...
