Liu was a scholar. As you know all chinese scholars are Taoists in their bones (rightfully pinted out by LuXun). Taoists are individualistic, self-isolated and value spirituality over material gain. So I think Liu got what he wanted. It would be an insult to Liu if bystanders like you had over sympathized with him.
