I guess it's more dealing with that the land is deeply isolated hence if bears didn't originate from the land, it won't be able to go there at all, or if anything originates from this land (how to spell???) at all, it won't be able to go to other places--that's the reason that why Australia has some strnage animals. I guess the answer should be closely related to this phenomenom in Australia.
Alas, why should we care if bear is only a collection of precious fur and percious flesh (espeically hands)?
