The battle of March 2 over Damansky Island (Chenpao in Chinese) in the Ussuri River was refought on March 14 and 15. Each side accused the other of aggression and claimed victory. Because no outside observers were permitted into the area and rival versions varied sharply, no one in the West knew what actually had happened, who the aggressor had been, or who had gained control of the island.
