I believe people thousands of years ago are the better study subjects of social evolution. At that time, people walked out of tribes and entered into a bigger society. They were still attached to their animal nature but learned to hide them by rules of morality, religion, and law. How these rules got more and more complicated and some of them finally backfired is another topic.
