most of the lunar missions are done. Like DSPSE, a.k.a, Clementine mission, ended 1994. That is why AES couldn't have been used. Regarding data transmission in Deep Space mission, the biggest problem with Deep space mission is data transmission error rather than data security, and especially Deep Space communication usually involves multiple hops and that makes encryption very hard, if those hops are needed to involve interpreting data. I think only shuttle and ISS uses bulk encryption. After all, the antenna for data communication in deep space programs are highly directional, it is very unlikely being intercepted.
