There was no telegraph back then and one was near Boston, the other in Verginia. There was no way they can check on each other like that.

According to the book, Jefferson was unconscious since July 3rd, and died in the morning on the 4th. When Adams was told it was the 4th, he said something like "It's a great day". He also said at some time on the same day "Jefferson survives".
