Hume’s emotivist approach to ethics was not
well received by philosophers. Kant’s (1785/1959)
rationalist ethical theory2 was created as an attempt
to refute Hume, and Kant has had a much larger
impact than Hume on modern moral philosophers
(e.g., Hare, 1981; Rawls, 1971), many of whom
have followed Kant in attempting to deduce a
foundation for ethics from the meaning of rationality
itself.
