Alliance Teen Dies After Being Hit by Teacher's Car
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Alliance police say charges likely will not be filed in an accident that killed a 15-year-old jogger.
Alison Draves, of 1082 Oakwood Drive, was hit by a car Monday night when she was jogging on Oakwood Drive. The teen died a day later from injuries sustained in the accident.
Alliance Police Chief Lawrence Dordea said the driver, John Hampu, 55, a teacher at Alliance High School where Alison Draves was a student, was obeying the 25 mph speed limit when the front right side of his car struck Draves around 8:10 p.m. Monday evening.
Dordea said it appears Draves stepped out in front of Hampu's vehicle as she started to cross the street to her home.
Draves was taken initially to Alliance Community Hospital and then air lifted to Akron Children's hospital where she later died.
Police say Draves was also wearing an MP3 player on her arm, leading them to believe she did not hear Hampu's vehicle approaching.
"I don't see that Mr. Hampu was at fault." said Chief Dordea, "The road is designed for vehicle traffic not pedestrian traffic and that neighborhood does not have sidewalks. It looks to me like a terrible tragedy."
Hampu is a well respected social studies teacher of 35 years at Alliance High School. Draves was a sophomore student.
Grief counselors were on hand Wednesday to talk to students.
Funeral arrangements for Drave are being finalized.
