General Introduction about the College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering

Qiushi Academy, as one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China, is the origin of Zhejiang University. It was founded in 1897 and located by the West Lake in Hangzhou City — a world-known historical and cultural place of interests. Zhejiang University is one of the state key universities in China with long history. After the development of over 100 years, Zhejiang University is now a comprehensive research university with international impact because of solid academic foundation, great teaching and research strength and distinctive research features.

College of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering (CMSCE) was established in 1999, which was a result of the regroup of three individual departments in the former Zhejiang University, namely Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Polymer Science and Engineering. Now, it has become a world recognized College in the related areas, characterized with the close combination between science and engineering, broad coverage in academic fields and relative large scale.

There are three state key laboratories, including State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials, Laboratory of Polymer Reaction Engineering and Laboratory of Chemical Engineering for Secondary Resource, as well as twelve research institutes in the College. Also, three research centers, Membrane and Water Treatment Technology Center , Research Center of Nano-Materials and Research Center of Advanced Fiber Material, are located in the College.

At present, about 300 faculty and staff members are affiliated with the CMSCE, among them, 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 90 full professors and 100 associate professors. Over 60 post doctors are currently doing research works in the College.

Each year, the CMSCE enrolls about 400, 300 and 100 new students of undergraduate students, postgraduate students and Ph. D. candidates, respectively, and the corresponding total full-time students reached about 1700, 900 and 500.

The faculties in the CMSCE are responsible for more than 100 research projects supported by National Nature Science Foundation of China and tens of major national scientific research projects, such as high-tech Industrialized Projects of National Plan Committee, "973" Projects of Key Basic Research. In addition, various kinds of scientific and technical services are offered to the enterprises for the development of regional economy.

There are three academic journals edited by the CMSCE including: “Journal of Chemical Engineering of Chinese Universities”, “Chemical Reaction Engineering and Technology” and “Journal of Materials Science and Engineering”, of which “Journal of Chemical Engineering of Chinese Universities” has been listed as source journal by Engineering Index.
