Bob Wilson, the director of Fermi Lab at U. Chicago, during hearings of the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy in 1969, was asked the value of the accelerator to national defense. Wilson replied: "it has nothing to do directly with defending our country, except to make it worth defending."
