Brain tumor is a complicated thing. it's hard to let people here to tell you what's the best way to treat your friend as they don't know the details. In general surgical removal of brain tumors and radiation/chemotherapy are three choices. and for some types of brain tumors surgery may not be doable.
periodical MRI and other tests can show tumor shrinkage or growth, and you friend can feel better or worse accordingly, depending on how well s/he responds to the treatment s/he receives (there are several protocols to treat brain tumor and doctors usually do several tests to decide which one is the best available treatment until all treatment options are exhausted and hopefully before then your friend is cured).
So for the moment, the best thing you can do to stay cool and help your friend improve the quality of his/her life.
