and would have treated it as an equal partner either, especially before China could have a chance to change its poor, weak, no-guts image. There are too many examples that US helped a regime only to abandom it later after its useful lifecycle ends.

The help from Soviet is not only in visible terms. It trained a generation of engineers, scientists, bureaucrats. I can't imagine US accepting students from communist China in 1950. It would take years to pass legislations in the house and senate to give student visa to mainland chinese nationals while at that time China needed expertise of all kinds so badly.
