I didn't read his paper in detail, but I think his work is interesting and also important for those paralyzed people. In the US, a large number people get paralyzed because of car accident.
I had a vague impression (learned in class long time ago) that there is a technique to control voiding by scratching abdominal skin. I guess Xiao's method is doing just that.
Urination is controlled by central nerve system. Xiao's work is based on the fact that there is some autonomous reflex in spinal cord which controls the voiding. It is also important in its scientific merit, namely that the somatic-autonomous reflex can be surgically established even though the pathway from spinal cord reflex to central nerve system is damaged.
This is a typical Chinese research: tricky and ingenous but somewhat trivial, considering that the effect of the surgery is not that significant.
