Has anyone here read "On the Beach"? It is a great book, if not one of the greatest. Don't watch the movie (not worth your time).
Also check out other works of the author (Neville Shute). He is not very well known but is my favorite author. I think lots of folks here will like him, esp. if you consider yourself to be individualistic in the healthy way (not the self-pitying type). I would start with A Town Like Alice.
